Silent reflux, also known as laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), is a condition where stomach acid backs up into the throat and voice box. Unlike typical acid reflux, silent reflux often doesn’t cause the typical symptoms like heartburn or indigestion. Instead, it manifests with subtler symptoms such as chronic cough, hoarseness, throat clearing, and difficulty swallowing.
This condition can be challenging to diagnose as its symptoms mimic those of other respiratory or throat-related issues. The lack of typical symptoms can lead to delayed recognition and treatment.
Certain lifestyle factors can exacerbate silent reflux, such as overeating, consuming acidic or spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol, and smoking. Additionally, lying down or bending over after eating can worsen symptoms.
Management of silent reflux often involves dietary and lifestyle modifications. This includes avoiding trigger foods and beverages, eating smaller meals, maintaining a healthy weight, and not lying down for at least three hours after eating. Elevating the head of the bed during sleep can also help prevent acid from refluxing into the throat.
