Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a potentially blinding disease. ROP occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow and spread throughout the retina, the tissue that lines the back of the eye.
Usually, birth weight and gestational age are the major risk factors for the development of ROP. Most babies with ROP have normal eyesight for their age. It is only when ROP progresses to the most severe stages that their vision is threatened, which can possibly cause blindness.
