Mast cells are part of your immune system. They are responsible for immediate allergic reactions. Mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) occurs when the mast cells in your body release too many substances inside them at the wrong times.
Mast cells can be very helpful when they perform properly. Conversely, when they are over-reactive, the immune system starts to attack the body and causes autoinflammation. But it’s hard to figure out what causes MCAS. In severe cases, it occurs in life-threatening condition called anaphylactic shock, which needs emergency treatment. MCAS is becoming more commonly recognized. However, there’s still no cure for MCAS.
