Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), previously known as Wegener’s granulomatosis, is a rare disease of uncertain cause. It results from inflammation within the tissues called granulomatous inflammation and blood vessel inflammation, which can damage organ systems. GPA can affect any organ, mainly the sinuses, lungs, and kidneys.
Active GPA causes inflammation within the blood vessels and organs, so early treatment is essential. Medications that suppress the immune system form the foundation of treatment for GPA. Thus, most people improve with medicines such as steroid, Cytoxan or Rituxan to slow or stop inflammation.
